Cornerstone Employers work closely with the East Sussex Careers Hub and Hastings Opportunity Area. They act as ambassadors, linking their business contacts with clusters of secondary schools and colleges, influencing careers strategy and ensuring that young people can learn from employers. All of our Cornerstone Employers contribute in their own way, whether it be supporting careers activities and events through providing Enterprise Advisers and Industry Champions from their workforce, providing project support through wider Careers Hub initiatives, or through representing the employer voice across the county in our work with schools and colleges.
Cornerstone Employers have not been afraid to try new methods to encourage
young people to get involved in their sector:
• In recognition of the anxieties teenagers suffer around exams, social enterprise The Let’s Do Business Group partnered with Robertsbridge Community College to provide one-to-one mentoring sessions for year 10 and 11 students, to increase their confidence and communication skills.
• In summer 2019 alone, manufacturing company Marshall Tufflex took part
in ten careers events, with staff giving careers inspiration to over 100 students, at six schools and colleges, offering work experience days, careers fairs and factory tours.
Eastbourne-based electrical contractors GM Monk worked with Hailsham
Community College to design a window sticker that Hailsham businesses
can display to show that they are supporting the school.
• During the Covid-19 pandemic, Lewes-based Cheesmur Building Contractors, in collaboration with Hailsham Community College and East Sussex Careers Hub, produced videos to inspire young people to enter the construction industry.
Cornerstone Employers host business breakfasts with local employers to
promote the benefits of connecting with schools, and regularly speak at Chamber of Commerce events. Seven of the businesses act as Enterprise Advisers, providing strategic support to individual schools.
Others are active members of Skills East Sussex Sector Task Groups, or host work experience, careers and apprenticeship talks and offer mentoring programmes.
