How to recruit an Apprentice

There are plenty of aspects to consider when recruiting an apprentice, such as:

  • What is your staffing budget?
  • What role do you have to fill, or can create?
  • Can you commit to enabling the apprentice to meet the 'Off-the-job' training requirement of 20% of their time?
  • Will they be supervised and working in a safe environment?

To help answer these questions, here are some useful links that you can look into.

For more general information about hiring an apprentice go to https://www.gov.uk/take-on-an-apprentice and for more information around funding and costs, go to https://hireanapprentice.campaign.gov.uk/

If you are a large employer with an annual staff salary bill of over £3 million, in which case you will be able to utilise your Levy account to fund your apprentice.

The Apprenticeship Levy is explained in more detail here https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/apprenticeship-levy-how-it-will-work/apprenticeship-levy-how-it-will-work#pay-apprenticeship-levy as does this Youtube clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQcAlys6Imw

All Levy employers are required to access the Apprenticeship Service account for their apprenticeships. Smaller companies with annual salary bills below the £3million threshold are not currently required to use the Apprenticeship Service, however are being encouraged to do so with it envisaged to be mandatory for all apprenticeships to go through the Apprenticeship Service later 2020. More information about how to register for and use the Apprenticeship Service is at https://www.gov.uk/guidance/manage-apprenticeship-funds

Recruiting an Apprentice

There are two methods of recruiting an apprentice. You can link with a training provider who will be able to advertise and recruit for your apprenticeship role vacancy as a free service. Alternatively if you have an existing staff member, or somebody who you would like to take on as an apprentice, you can contact the training provider to set up the apprenticeship for your identified recruit. You are free to explore as many training provider options as you wish before making your decision as to who to recruit and train an apprentice through.
