To develop students’ interest in reading and studying Shakespeare, prose, drama and poetry; to encourage enthusiastic engagement with the ideas in texts and the writer’s crafting of language; to promote discussion of literary ideas in a co-operative and explorative seminar setting.

A relevant, engaging and up-to-date course that  approaches the reading and study of literature through the lens of genre and theory, encouraging the independent study of a range of texts within a shared context, giving logic and meaning to the way that texts are grouped for study.           

A love of reading and a willingness to extend reading experience beyond the prescribed list of texts are desirable.                                       


How will it be delivered?

A Level Paper 1: Literary Genes

Students study one of the following:  Option 1A: Aspects of Tragedy or Option 1B: Aspects of   Comedy.

Students study of three texts: one Shakespeare text; a second drama text and one further text, of which one must be written pre-1900.

Paper 2: Texts and Genres

Students study one of the following: Option 2A: Elements of crime writing or Option 2B: Elements of political and social protest writing.

Students will study of three texts: one post-2000 prose text; one poetry and one further text, of which one must be written pre-1900.

The examination will also include an unseen passage.

Paper 3: Theory and Independence

Students will study of two texts: one poetry and one prose text, informed by study of the Critical    Anthology. Students will produce two essays of 1,250 – 1,500 words, each responding to a different text and linking to a different aspect of the Critical Anthology. One essay can be re-creative. The re-creative piece will be accompanied by a commentary.

Entry requirements

5 in English Literature GCSE and 5 in English Language GCSE.
